A Fall Checklist for Your Boat from a Detailer’s Perspective

248515_3669193297382_294848897_nAs the summer boating season comes to a slow close, it is time to think of Fall. From our friends at Marine Detail Specialists, here is a checklist of things to do to in regards to getting your boat ready for a winter’s nap.

Fall Boat Checklist (From a Detailer’s Perspective)

  • Remove Unnecessary items on deck (Hoses, lines, coolers, extra fenders, cushions all attract dirt and algae growth if left out on deck and cause these items to wear out prematurely)
  • Check dock lines for chafe and wear and add extras to keep the boat secure
  • Align the boat so that the bow is facing the weather if possible
  • Inflate and add fenders
  • Secure all zippers and snaps on canvas to keep pieces from flapping in the wind
  • Stow extra canvas or consider winter covers
  • Open cupboards and prop up hatches in cushions inside to promote airflow
  • Set up and run small low wattage heaters and or dehumidifier to reduce moisture
  • Consider closing sea cocks (make sure to put a sign on ignition)
  • Wash entire boat and check for leaks
  • Wax Topsides to protect gel-coat or paint over the winter
  • Remove or cover tender, especially inflatables
  • Find someone to check on the boat periodically and after any major weather if you are not able to
  • Make sure emergency contact info is in the window and legible
  • Make a list of projects to complete on the boat and find appropriate service providers
  • Work with your mechanic to get preventative maintenance done in the off-season
